As snow storms, cold weather and power outages present challenges for travelers, power companies are reminding people everywhere to be ready.
Overnight, winter storms can cause outages that affect thousands of people and homes. While crews work to plow the roads and restore power, there are some safety guidelines that we can take if we must drive in the snow.
Winter driving safety tips
Prepare your vehicle for winter weather by keeping up with your car maintenance.
- Be sure your tires are good for winter driving.
- Have your brakes inspected to be sure they work effectively.
- Check your antifreeze level.
- Check your battery that it is
- Always keep your gas tank at least half full
Also, prepare and have an emergency kit in your car with gear you may need when traveling in areas with ice and snow. Include things like:
- Mobile phone and charger
- Jumper cables
- Spare tire that is properly inflated
- Flashlights and extra batteries
- Matches in a waterproof container
- Snow brush and/or ice scraper
- Kitty litter, bagged salt, or sand for traction
- Flares and/or reflectors
- First aid kit
- Tool kit
- Gloves, hat, and other warm wear
- Blankets
- Tow and tire chains
- Water and high-energy snacks
If you are headed out on a trip with the possibility of cold weather, ensure a safe and happy time by preparing ahead of time just in case you get hit with a storm or power outage.
