Osama El Shamy, MD, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Renal, Electrolyte and Hypertension Division at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed medical school at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, residency training in Internal Medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, and fellowship training in Nephrology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He also completed an additional year of specialized fellowship training in home dialysis, including both home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Dr. El Shamy serves as Medical Director of the DaVita Cedar Grove dialysis unit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the University of Pennsylvania, he was an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University, where he established a dialysis fellowship program. Throughout his career, he has assumed numerous leadership roles dedicated to advancing home dialysis education, training, and patient care.
A well-published author and recognized authority in home dialysis, Dr. El Shamy has been invited to organize and present at national and international meetings. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis North America Chapter (ISPD-NAC) Program Committee, Treasurer of the ISPD-NAC, and Interim North America Representative to the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) Council-at-Large. He is also an Associate Editor for Kidney360, serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Nephrology Board, is a member of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Quality Committee, and serves as a Hub Committee member for the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Home Dialysis Project ECHO. In addition, he is both an author and reviewer for the peritoneal dialysis section of UpToDate.
His other educational leadership roles include serving as faculty for Home Dialysis University and leading the ISPD North American Chapter Central Time Zone Journal Club series. He has also contributed to numerous national and international initiatives, including the ASN Home Dialysis Focus Group, the ASN Post-Acute Kidney Injury on Dialysis (AKI-D) Care Workgroup, and the KDIGO Controversies Conference on Home Dialysis. Additionally, he has served as an abstract reviewer for both the International Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Nephrology annual meetings.
Dr. El Shamy is the recipient of the Gold Humanism in Medicine Award and is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. His dedication to education, innovation, and patient-centered care has made him a respected leader in nephrology and home dialysis worldwide.
