Dr. George Schreiner

History Maker: NKF President 1968-1970, Pioneer

History Maker: NKF President (1968-1970), Dr. George Schreiner, was treating kidneys even before it was called “nephrology.” His work is responsible for many things we take for granted: advancing dialysis from experimental to routine treatment, saving millions; through advocacy, replacing “life or death” committees with Medicare coverage so all can get dialysis; helping pass the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act; and countless research contributions. Beloved by patients and colleagues, Dr. Schreiner was founding member of ASN and ISN, and Chief of Nephrology at Georgetown University Hospital.
