Excellence in Kidney Transplantation to be presented at NKF’s 2020 Spring Clinical Meetings

New York, NY – January 28, 2020 – The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) will present the award for Excellence in Kidney Transplantation Gabriel Danovitch, MD, at NKF’s 2020 Spring Clinical Meetings in New Orleans in March.

The award was established last year to recognize a scientist or clinician scientist whose exceptional research has contributed novel insights in or resulted in improved access to kidney transplantation. The award embodies the dedication of NKF to help people navigate the challenges of kidney disease, organ donation and transplantation.

"It has been a privilege for me to be involved in the care of transplant patients for over three decades," Dr. Danovitch said. “I am honored by the award and to be in the company of scientists and clinicians it represents.”

Dr. Danovitch, born in Cardiff, Wales, received his medical degree from St. Bartholomew's Hospital of the University of London. He completed his residency training in London and in Bersheeba, Israel and his nephrology fellowship training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

“I am honored to present this award to Dr. Danovitch as his contribution to the field embodies the spirit and purpose of this recognition,” said Dr. Holly Kramer, President of NKF. “His work advances our understanding of this devastating disease and that ultimately helps patients live better lives.”

Dr. Danovitch served on the faculty at Albert Einstein and then directed the nephrology unit at Soroka Hospital in Israel. He currently holds the John J. Kuiper Chair in Nephrology and Renal Transplantation at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA with the academic rank of Distinguished Professor of Medicine and has received the school's prestigious Mellinkoff Award.

He is the longtime Medical Director of its renowned Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program: one of the largest and most successful in the U.S. Dr. Danovitch has devoted his recent career to various aspects of clinical kidney transplantation, and is an internationally recognized authority on transplant immunosuppression, clinical transplant care, transplant ethics and public policy.
