Plant-Based Enteral Formulas for People with Kidney Disease

Plant-based diets have been associated with lowering dietary acid load and the bioavailability of phosphorus and potassium, all beneficial for many patients with kidney disease. Likewise, plant-based enteral formulas may confer the same benefits, while also combatting the ever-present problem of malnutrition among patients with kidney disease and kidney failure. Enteral formulas are a key component of medical nutrition therapy in general, and no matter their other properties, such as peptides or hydrolyzed amino acids, may provide an added benefit for those with kidney dysfunction in all settings, including critical care.  The podcast below delves into the use of plant-based enteral formulas in those with compromised or reduced kidney function.
