The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is remembering Dr. Shaul G. Massry, a trailblazer and leader in the nephrology community and at the National Kidney Foundation. A statement from Kevin Longino, CEO of NKF follows:
“Dr. Massry served the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) with great distinction and influence since 1968, first as an active member of the Southern California affiliate and then at the National level. Through his service as the vice-president and Chairman of the National Advisory Committee from 1988 – 1990, Dr. Massry was instrumental in substantially increasing the amount of the NKF Research Endowment Fund, which has enabled us to invest over $200 million to support research on the causes and treatment of kidney disease. He was also a strong advocate for organ donation for the Foundation, landing an audience with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in 1990 where he was able to obtain the full support of the church in promoting the awareness of the need of organ donors. As President of our organization, as well as Chairman of the Annual Meeting Committee from 1990 -1992, he focused his efforts on expanding the professional membership and continuing medical education offerings of the Foundation. It is because of Dr. Massry that the NKF Spring Clinical Meetings are the premier educational event that they are today. He was a true visionary and pioneer for NKF.”
Dr. Massry was the Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Physiology & Biophysics at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, and served as Chief of its Division of Nephrology from 1974 – 2000. His scientific and academic contributions have been recognized by several awards and honors, including the NKF David M. Hume Memorial Award. His major scientific contributions were in the area of mineral metabolism. He led the work group that developed the first KDOQI Clinical Practice Guideline on Bone Metabolism and Disease in Chronic Kidney Disease. He published over 600 scientific papers, 111 chapters in books, and edited 32 books.
