Is a GFR of 49 unusual for an 85 year old and will a nephrologist be able to provide a modified diet?

An estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 49 milliliters per minute per 1.73 meters squared may be normal for an 85 year old.  I do not believe you need to see a nephrologist.  I believe your primary care physician can provide for your care.  I would only recommend a diet with no added salt for cooking and no added salt at the table for someone your age.  No other dietary modifications are needed for someone your age.
