We have been told to limit animal protein. Are milk, milk products and eggs considered animal protein?

Eggs are an animal protein.  However, they are a very high value protein and it is safe for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to eat. We do limit milk and dairy products in patients with Stage 4 or 5 CKD. If you are Stage 3, I would not limit. Hence, if your estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is less than 30 milliliters per minute per 1.73 meters squared, you should limit your diet to some extent. The extent of dietary restriction must be determined by your physician or dietitian. For more information on GFR click here. For more information on Diet and CKD click here.
