I would caution you that with chronic kidney disease (CKD) that many patients are taking a multiple of medications and that each of these medications can cause a drug interaction with an anti-histamine that you take over-the-counter. Hence, I would always suggest that any medication that you take or any pill that you put in your mouth should be discussed with your primary care physician. They are best suited to make sure no drug interactions occur. In general, anti-histamines do not cause kidney problems. Some, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can cause retention of urine in your bladder. Others such as Claritin and Zyrtec are generally very safe. I recommend that you always discuss this with your physician.
