Cost Analysis

The true burden of CKD is often hidden, silently impacting costs.

Breakdowns in CKD testing and diagnosis contribute to unmanaged risk and costs. An evaluation of health plan data can illuminate:

  • How effectively employees are being tested for CKD
  • The quality of overarching CKD care they are receiving
  • The potential costs associated with CKD, including cardiovascular events and morbidity associated with CKD as it progresses.

NKF recommends that employers evaluate claims data.

Identify where undetected CKD may be driving utilization, costs and overall plan performance.

  • Identify the density of diagnosed CKD among your population
  • Identify the burden of CKD risk within your population
  • Identify the rate of appropriate testing among high-risk populations

Employers should assess quality of care.

Employers with onsite clinics, local provider contracts, or regionally concentrated teams can use lab or electronic health record data to uncover deeper kidney health insights.

We’re here to help.

Our full data analysis guide is included for your use.

NKF’s Population Health Team is also available to provide technical assistance to health plan resources to help shape the data analysis and its interpretation.

Benefits and Corporate Policies to Advance Kidney Health

Health benefits and workplace policies can facilitate CKD prevention, early diagnosis and quality of care. In consultation with industry experts, NKF has developed recommendations for employee benefits and corporate policies to create a more kidney health promoting workplace.

Benefits Recommendations

The most cost-effective way to manage kidney disease is to prevent its development in the first place. NKF has compiled policy and benefit recommendations to promote overall health and well-being and manage risk factors for CKD.

Benefits Recommendations

For people at high risk for developing CKD (especially individuals with diabetes or hypertension) there are several considerations to ensure that CKD is detected early and that employees have access to treatments to slow CKD progression and prevent rising cardiovascular risk.

Benefits Recommendations

For employees with advanced CKD, employers can ensure that individuals have access to high quality, effective dialysis and can help facilitate kidney transplant.

Employee Awareness and Health Education Tools

NKF has a suite of resources available to employers that can help support kidney disease awareness and health literacy about kidney disease.

Wellness Communications Recommendations

Ongoing health messaging in association with designated “health awareness” months can help to reinforce awareness and action around kidney health. These messages can be incorporated into both internal ‘intranet’, newsletters, or other communications platforms and external facing social media pages.

NKF recommends the following calendar of communications:

  • February: National Heart Month
  • March: National Kidney Month and National Nutrition Month
  • April: Organ Donation Month
  • July: Hydration
  • August: Primary Care check-up / Annual wellness visit day
  • November: National Diabetes Month
