I have Medullary Sponge Kidney and I am susceptible to oxalate kidney stones. I have been following the foods to avoid for high oxalate content such as strawberries, nuts, chocolate, spinach, beets and rhubarb. However, I still make lots of stones even though I drink plenty of water each day. I am 52 years old and weigh 143 lbs. I am lactose intolerant so I use goat milk products. I have tried to find lists of low oxalate foods but the ones I find are different on each website. How do I know which one to follow? Is there a standard list of low oxalate foods? Do you have any suggestions on where I can find recipes that would benefit me with the restrictions I have? I am hoping to find suggestions on how to lessen the amount of stones I form if that is possible.

Diet is one factor that can affect kidney stone formation. Speak to a Registered Dietitian to create a plan specific for your needs, including dietary modifications for medullary sponge kidneys. He or she should be able to work with you to compile a comprehensive listing of foods that are oxalate rich, also taking into consideration your lactose intolerance. As you mentioned, oxalate rich foods include rhubarb, beets, okra, spinach, Swiss chard, sweet potatoes, nuts, tea, chocolate and soy products. Treatment may also include drinking more fluids to discourage kidney stone formation or dietary restrictions of sodium, protein, cholesterol and caffeine. Click on the link below to learn more about diet and kidney stones:https://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/diet.cfm In addition, the DASH diet has been shown to possibly reduce the risk of kidney stone formation.
