The Power of Positivity on Your Health

The Power of Positivity on Your Health

There are many things you can do to help someone struggling with kidney disease. You can donate blood a couple times a year, maybe even a kidney if you’re a match, donate money to kidney research, or even figure out how to donate your car to Kidney Cars. But there’s something else you can do, right now, that won’t take much effort at all: you can offer them a positive attitude.

Positivity Pays Off

In a study done in 2013, Danish researchers found that heart disease patients who cultivated a positive attitude were 58% more likely to live an extra 5 years. And more than just living longer, a positive attitude helped patients to live better during that time.

Positive thinking may begin by looking on "the bright side" or trying to find a "silver lining" in the midst of a difficult period, but it typically doesn’t end there. Positive people usually exercise more, which makes them even happier which makes them healthier, and on and on in a positive cycle.

Health Benefits of Positivity

A good mental attitude affects your health at the cellular level. Positivity helps boost the function of immune cells, which helps your body to fight off sickness and discomfort. It also helps in decreasing your chances of getting cancer. Cancer grows best in non-oxygenated bodies. Laughing can increase the amount of oxygen in your blood, which helps to fight off cancer growth. Laughter really IS the best medicine!

How to Get Positive

If you are struggling to feel positive there are a few ways to get started. One method is the "fake it till you make it" plan. It turns out that acting happy and well can increase your happiness and well-being. It might not cure a disease or mend a bone, but it can improve your mood to simply smile; even when you don’t feel like it.

Another method to improve mood is to watch or read something humorous. Laughing is a benefit to the body. Watch a comedian, a funny movie, or visit with a friend who always makes you laugh. Taking the time to do something just for the fun of it can improve your mood and can help to decrease pain.

Share Your Smile

Another important aspect of positivity is how easily it spreads. A smile can be contagious. Serving others, visiting with friends, sharing a meal, all these activities can help you to feel better, add years to your life, and happiness to those years.
