National Kidney Foundation Council on Renal Nutrition

Kristen Nonahal, RDN, FNKF, is a practicing dietitian with Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. She specializes in chronic kidney disease and has over 20 years of experience in the field of renal nutrition. Kristen began her career as a dietitian after completing a Bachelor of Science degree from Mercy College of Detroit’s Coordinated Undergraduate Program. Over her 35 year career, she has been employed in both clinical and outpatient settings. Kristen found her passion for working with renal patients while employed with St. John Dialysis in Detroit and later Fresenius Medical Care-NA in both their peritoneal and hemodialysis programs. Seeing the need for more education pre-dialysis, she accepted the position of Renal Nutrition Specialist with the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension at Henry Ford Hospital in the CKD Clinic.

Here Kristen educates patients and families with CKD stage 3-5, hypertension, and kidney stones. She has also provided nutrition counseling to Pre-Kidney and Pre-Liver transplant patients along with living donors. Her other interests include mentoring new dietitians as she currently serves on the Dietetic Intern Selection Committee and is also a preceptor in the CKD Clinic. She also educates nephrology fellows, nurses, and associated health care professionals on renal nutrition and its impact on patient outcomes.

Kristen has been an active member of the Council on Renal Nutrition both on the local and national level. She has served as past Chair of the Michigan chapter, CRN Region III Representative, and was the 2018 Chair of National CRN of National Kidney Foundation. She has been an invited lecturer with Michigan CRN, the Michigan NKF PATH program, and the NKF Spring Clinical Meetings. Kristen is also a member of the Nephrology Standard of Practice/Standard of Professional Performance committee workgroup, and volunteers on the Michigan Academy of Food and Nutrition Licensure Task Force.
