- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 1 to 1½ cups pitted cherries, frozen or fresh, chopped
- 1 to 1¼ cups brown sugar
- 1⅓cups unsweetened apple juice
- 1¼ cups apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1½ teaspoons dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional

- Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
- Add tomato sauce, cherries, brown sugar, apple juice, apple cider vinegar, chili powder, dry mustard, and cayenne pepper, if using.
- Bring the sauce to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the sauce thickens. Stir often.
- Transfer the sauce to a blender and blend until smooth.
